Tips Before You Surf the Net, Computer Security
Unfortunately, there is no magic bullet that will guarantee the security of your computer 100 percent; however, what you can do to continue to improve your computer’s security and decrease the possibility of infection is use a firewall, keep your system up-to-date, and equip your computer with reputable antivirus software.
Of course, you should always back-up files on your computer. This allows you to have an uninfected version of everything your computer holds in the event your computer is infected.
Do not click on Pop-Up boxes, no matter how enticing they seem and don’t open up emails from someone you don’t know. Both can lead to infection without your knowledge or consent, leaving you and your computer open to harm.
You will also want to be very cautious about email “Warnings†you receive that are sent to inform you “that an email you sent earlier contained a virus.†Don’t open these, despite the seemingly well-intending subject lines.
Why, you ask? Simply put, you will want to avoid these because such emails may actually indicate that a virus has listed your e-mail address as the sender of tainted e-mail. Rest assured, this does not necessarily mean you have a virus. Remember: some viruses have the ability to forge e-mail addresses.
Remember: the fight against unwanted spyware and malware starts with you. By protecting your computer with software that wards off these nasty invaders, you can better keep them at bay and keep your files, your computer and your identity safe.
